Red velvet is about exploring the ideas and boundaries of environmental art. Van Duijn wanted to make something that would potentially inspire someone to take another look at our earth, and motivate them to do something about climate change. Through seeing how beautiful earth can be, it would allow one to have the space to reconsider their choices, and voluntarily make change. People are constantly bombarded with negative media, and we are desensitized to bad news. Instead of showing someone the sad aspects we’ve created on earth, to scare them into some kind of motivation, van Duijn wanted to try a different approach, and inspire someone instead.
