Taking Shape
2022
“Sleep patterns and dusty thoughts
Dream worlds make up time
The ebb and flow, the constant fall of life
Preservation, Fossilization
Trying to grab every last drop
Memory fades while light peaks through drawn curtains
Fingers stretch sore bones
Spinning lamps and goldenrod, heaven waits and so does god
Pleasure speaks like dogs who howl nighttime nightmares follow the one running
Wake me when the sun rises”
Taking Shape was a piece created from dreams. Quite literally. van Duijn made a sheet of beeswax to her body size, and slept on it for one week. While van Duijn slept, she dreamt. In the morning she recorded her dreams with paper and pen. In the installation van Duijn shows the dreams in a burnt stage. Burning the dreams allowed for release back into the spiritual world where they once came. The way the wax is laid on the pedestal is the way it cracked beneath van Duijn as she slept. The remnants of the dreams lay in a mesh basket suspended above the wax, where they are mixed with flowers. Van Duijn’s deep connection to nature and natural elements can be seen in her use of selected flora here. The Ashs seep through the mesh onto the wax below, creating a full story of the materials.
